Job Description

An HVAC Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing HVAC projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality and safety standards. This role combines technical expertise with project management skills, making it a crucial position in the construction and mechanical contracting industries.

Job Responsibilities

Project Planning & Execution

  • Develop detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, and contractors.
  • Review blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.

Budgeting & Cost Management

  • Prepare cost estimates and manage project budgets.
  • Source and procure HVAC equipment and materials.
  • Track expenses and adjust budgets as needed.

Team & Vendor Management

  • Oversee HVAC technicians, subcontractors, and site supervisors.
  • Assign tasks and ensure workforce efficiency.
  • Negotiate contracts and maintain relationships with suppliers.

Quality Control & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure projects meet local and national HVAC codes (ASHRAE, OSHA, EPA).
  • Conduct site inspections to monitor work quality.
  • Implement safety protocols and resolve on-site issues.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Act as a liaison between clients, project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Provide progress reports and address client concerns.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering projects as per specifications.

Required Skills

Technical Skills

  • HVAC system design and installation knowledge.
  • Understanding of building codes, mechanical drawings, and ductwork.
  • Experience with HVAC software (AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, MS Project).

Project Management Skills

  • Ability to plan, schedule, and execute projects efficiently.
  • Strong budgeting and cost-control skills.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies (Agile, Lean, PMP).

Leadership & Communication

  • Ability to manage teams, resolve conflicts, and drive performance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication for client interactions.
  • Negotiation skills for vendor and contractor management.

Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking

  • Quick decision-making to handle project delays or issues.
  • Ability to troubleshoot HVAC system problems.
  • Adaptability to unforeseen project challenges.

Education & Certifications

Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or HVAC Technology (preferred).
  • Associate degree or HVAC trade school diploma with strong experience can also lead to this role.

Certifications (Highly Recommended)

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) – Enhances project management skills.
  • LEED Certification – Beneficial for energy-efficient HVAC projects.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification – Required for handling refrigerants.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification – Ensures workplace safety compliance.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) – Useful for energy management roles.
